Morning breaks near Upper Matecumbe Key 12/23/10

Good overnight motor sail from Ft Lauderdale. About 30 more miles to Marathon. Came inside to Hawks Channel near Molasis Reef. The Gulf stream was just killing us as it was only about a mile South east of the reef. Was being pounded by waves and opposing current. Decided that the best route to the keys is the channel, but going back is obviously the Gulf Stream. Should be in Marsthon ny mid afternoon as we are back up to about 5,5 to 6 kts now. Looking forward to a nice hot shower.

On watch, watching lunar eclipst

On Bob Harrison's boat off Jupiter Inlet. Mid watch during the lunar eclipst. Listening to Pink Floyd on my iPhone. Wow, sky full of stars and the neatest eclipst I've ever seen.

Richard / Sunny but cool
12/08/2010, Port Canaveral, Fl

Striped out the old caulk from under the portside cap rail and recaulked. Hopefully this will eliminate some of the leaks coming in. Big torrential rain last Monday, day before China left to go back to NY. Will do the rest tomorrow along with caulking around the portside stanchions. Beautiful day, hopefully the real cold weather is behind us for awhile.

Happy Chanukah to all my Jewish Friends

From the proverbial goisha guy, tonight is the 7th night of Chanukah and the lighting of the 7th candle of the Menorah.  I wish all my Jewish friends a happy Chanukah.  For all my Christian friends who don't know about the Menorah, the following is a little article I wrote for my Harborwalk Publication a couple of years ago that kind of explains it.

The menorah symbolizes the burning light in the temple, as well as marking the eight days of the Chanukah festival.  Some say it also celebrates the light of freedom won by the Maccabees for the Jewish people. About 2200 years ago, Greek kings, who reigned from Damascus, ruled over the land of Judea and the Jews living there. One Greco-Syrian King, Antiochus Epiphanes, forbade the Jewish people from praying to their God, practicing their customs, and studying their Torah. Antiochus forced the Jews to worship the Greek gods. In response to this persecution, Judah Maccabee and his four brothers organized a group of resistance fighters known as the Maccabees. Against great odds, the Maccabees succeeded to drive the Greco-Syrians out of Judea. The Maccabees reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. They cleaned the Temple, removing the Greek symbols and statues. When Judah and his followers finished cleaning the temple, they rededicated it. On the 25th day of the month of Kislev in 164 BCE, the Temple was purified and rededicated.

According to tradition, when the Maccabees entered the Holy Temple, they discovered that the Greco-
Syrians had defiled the oil which was used to Temple's menorah. Only one vat of purified oil
remained - enough for only one day. It would take the Jews a week to process more purified oil. Then a miracle occurred (yes my Christian friends, they happened before Jesus also). The Maccabees lit the menorah and it burned for not one, but eight days, by which time the new, purified oil was ready. This is why the Chanukah Menorah has eight candles.

PS, OK because I am so goia I'm not sure whether you spell it Chanukah or Hanukkah.  Enlighten me please.

Afghan Women's Uncertain Future

This a great article in the Daily Beast on the future of Afghan women.
http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-12-03/afghan-womens-uncertain-future/?om_rid=NsfavY&om_mid=_BM$k$bB8WI3DdA.  Note in the article that the girl is asked if she thinks her when she gets married that her husband will let her be a doctor.  She says she will never marry a conservative man.  Funny the Taliban are Conservatives.  If anyone is interested, one of the best books I've read lately A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini really gives insight into this.  I highly recommend it.

You're right.  That is a little too high for me, but someone has to do it and there are people that love that stuff.

See me naked, frisk me, big deal, the more they do the better I like it.

Yes, from one you flies frequently, go ahead run me through that full bodied scanner.  Do it a couple of times if you want to.  I'm sure that the person on the other end of that scanner by this time has seen so many "semi naked outlines" that mine does not excite them.  If it does I would actually be flattered.  As far as the pat down goes, I have gone through that many times before also.  Big deal.  Just so long as they don't stick their hand or finger in any orifices on my body, I'm ok with it.  I say this because as a frequent flyer I put myself in the shoes of all those people on the three flights on 2000/09/11.  What would I do?  Would I have the guts to challenge hijackers knowing it was certain death.  Its a scary thought, but flying often I have a tendency to look around at my fellow passengers and say "what if".  This scares me more than the plane having engine trouble or experiencing bad weather.  Bottom line is I don't want someone on the plane with me that has a bomb, or a knife or a gun or a box cutter.  If I have to give up a little privacy for that than so be it.  I'm not giving up my liberty because I have the right to opt for another form of transportation if I don't like it.  Therefore this media frenzy about this is just another episode of people trying to control the discussion in this country for partisan purposes.  In my opinion these people need to get over it.  The first time someone sneaks a bomb onto a plane because the TSA has cowered in the face to this onslaught, it will a victory for our enemies and a real loss for our country and our liberty.

Sunday Morning Visitor

This is one of my friends who stop by each morning to say hello.   This morning he/she? needed to be hosed down a little. Started drinking water from the hose and rolled over on his back with his arms crossed over his chest for a belly scratch.

Back on the Boat

Back on the boat in Port Canaveral this morning after Albuquerque and NYC.  Was awakened this morning at about 7:30 with a fish feeding frenzy underneath my boat.  Must have been some really big Jack or Snook down there chasing mullet as you would not have believed the thumping and splashing going on right under my bed.  Beautiful day here now, about 75 already.  Back in shorts, teeshirt and flip flops and loving it.

The Starving Artist Cafe is a unique venue on City Island, In the Bronx.  I lived on City Island from 2004-2006 and became a fan of the Starving Artist and friend of the Glicks.  Tonight China and I trained and bussed over to City Island to enjoy Rubber Soul, an all Beatles group.  Had a great time and many thanks for Monica for Squeezing us in.  Here is a little taste of Rubber Soul captured on my Iphone.

Photos of 1st day of the Cocoa Beach Air Show

The Cocoa Beach Air Show features aerobatics, a race with the GEICO Racing Boat team, loud jets and demonstration by the Thunderbirds.  Kind of a bumpy day on the water, but otherwise just great, temperature low 80s, winds ENE at 10-15, seas 4-6ft.

Sailing off Cape Canaveral

Again a gorgeous day.  Caught about a 3 foot long King Mackerel which of course got away as we tried to bring it into the boat. Was too busy to take photos.  Sailboats are not really fishing boats and it is not that easy to land a big fish, especially when it has teeth and the captain and crew are sailors and not fishermen.  Next time though this captain sails with a good sharp gaff.  Anyway  temperature was mid 80s, winds out of the ESE at 12 to 15 and seas about 3-4ft.  Back at the dock caught an angel fish which of course went back in, then a flounder which was my dinner.
