John Ellsworth gives advice on enjoyable singlehandling

John Ellsworth gives advice on enjoyable singlehandling and setting up your boat for going it alone. Are you dependent upon another person in order to sail? How many times have you wanted to go out and enjoy your boat but couldn't get crew? You probably ended up not doing what you enjoy most. Although you can learn much from having skillful hands on board, being dependent on them curtails your experience and development as a sailor. If you learn to sail alone, you'll come a long way in your knowledge of boathandling and the sea. Here are some tips on getting started. They include ways of making it easier to pick up a mooring, set and weigh anchor, tie up at a dock, and cast off. In addition, we'll discuss heaving-to, so you can prepare your lines and fenders before entering a harbor. And if you don't have headsail roller-furling, you'll find out how to install an alternative—a jib downhaul that can be handled from the cockpit. Much of your success in getting under

Hurricane Irene in NYC

Watching all the news channels as well as all the local tv stations in NYC, you would think that all of NYC was being battered by winds and rising tides flooding all the streets.  Well it may be happening someplace but in Midtown Manhattan there was no wind, very little rain and absolutely no flooding.  Nevertheless, all the airports are closed, the sujbways are closed down, the Long Island Railroad and NJ Rail is not running, the buses are not running, stores are all closed because with no transportation workers can't come into the city to work.  The streets are deserted, no taxi cabs and no horns blowing.  Very eerie for a city that never sleeps.  All in all this was hyped to be much worse than it really was.  Well I suppose the practice was worth it for the city to get ready for something real.   Posted via email from Captain Richard Burton

I Never Thought I was a Virgo Anyway

Well tonight I found out that I am not a Virgo, I'm now a Leo.  I always wanted to be a Leo anyway.  I was watching last night's edition of The Daley Show (on Hulu) and found out from Jon Stewart that there are now 13 Zodiac signs (I'm a little cut off from the every day news).  Well anyway there is a new Zodiac sign called  ”Ophiuchus” and is depicted by a man holding a snake that symbolizes “Imhotep” of Egypt with snake symbolizing the Medicine.  The theory this change  is based on the shift of Earth’s Alignment.    Due to the gravitational pull from the Moon ,the earth has shifted in it’s position and hence all the previous astrological signs must be adjusted to bear with the change along with getting a 13th Zodiac star “Ophiuchus”.  So check out your new Zodiac sign below.   New Zodiac Signs Chart 2011 is given below: Capricorn: January 20 to February 16 Aquarius: February 16 to March 11 Pisces: March 11 to April 18. Aries: April 18 to May 13 Taurus: May 13 to June 2
